At the heart of Farid Abboud's significant diplomatic and political experience is his very substantial academic career. Not only does he have a Diploma of Higher Studies in Political Science from Beirut's Université Saint-Joseph, but he has also received a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, better known as UCLA. In addition to advanced degrees as a student, he also served as an assistant professor of political science at his alma mater, Université Saint-Joseph, between 1973 and 1977.
Ambassador Farid Abboud is perhaps best known for his long and distinguished career in diplomatic service for his home country of Lebanon, which started with a position with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beirut beginning in 1974. He had the honor of being one of the longest serving Lebanese ambassadors to the United States, holding that position from 1999-2007. Mr. Abboud has served as the Lebanese Ambassador to China since 2013 and he was Lebanon's ambassador to Tunisia from 2007-2013.
During what has been a long diplomatic career, Farid Abboud also served as the assistant director-general of the Department of Political Affairs in the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and he has served Lebanese embassies in Rome, Moscow and London. Of course, he has also served his country in many other ways. For example, he served as Lebanon's General Counsel in Los Angeles from 1990-1995, and he has represented Lebanon as an integral member of Lebanese delegations to many international conferences, such as Understanding in Southern Lebanon in 1996 and U.N. General Assembly Sessions in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He also spoke once at a meeting of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, delivering a speech entitled, "Lebanon and the Peace Process: An Update."
